About Face

Past words, past deeds
Slice my memory
Only fools search
for reasons not there
At the end of care.

Momentary lapses in character
Stand and scream at me;
Ghosts in my conscience refuse to leave,
Unwelcome guests in the house of my being
Stamping out their grotesque cigarettes
On the floor of my soul.

To go from saved to damned
In the span of a single day
Has left me faithless.
Love lies kicked and stained:

The power of a single soul, innate,
One must never underestimate.
